WELCOME! The City of Monmouth was founded  in 1856 and has been providing quality public service for over 150 years! Monmouth is a city of 9,630 (July 2009) residents and has its own electric distribution system. The city is located 20 minutes west of Salem, the state capitol. The Pacific Ocean and Cascade Mountains are an hour’s drive from the city.  

Monmouth’s educational opportunities rank as one of the highest in the state. Monmouth is home to Western Oregon University (WOU), a 4-year institution of higher education, offering a variety of degree programs to more than 5,000 students. The beautiful campus boasts the distinction of having one of the largest Christmas trees in the United States. Established in 1856, the University has had several names throughout the years and is currently the oldest public university in Oregon and on the West Coast.  For more information on the history of WOU.

is located west of the City of Independence. Together the two cities co-sponsor a number of events, including the annual old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration, called Western Days.
